Why not try to be a little more open minded? The archetypical sax + piano + bass + drums quartets of the 1950s and 60s are much more stereotypical than this, for instance, expecially with solo order and all that. That's why people like Shorter and Zawinul (and many others!) were so refreshing in the 1970s and 80s.

@@herrbonk3635 Why would you think saucy is not open minded. There is nothing to be open minded about, it's the truth. I agree with saucy. It is stereotypical 80s sound and it does detract from the composition. Sounds at times like old video game music, just composed impeccably. It just hasn't aged well. At Wayne Shorter Tribute with Esperanza, it sounds great. That's why to me, in general, there are always exceptions and great stuff, but in general 80s are my least favourite decade of music for the same reasons. They had some new technology, new synths, midi, drum machines, digital effects, and they started raping them. People were so delighted that things like that exist, that they haven't learned yet how to use them subtly, they were overusing them.

​@@loonaya I've already explained exactly that... But again, the 1980s was not any more stereotypical than any other decade. Whether you like a particular instrument sound or not is another thing entirely. I see your point with the dominant synths in some of Shorters productions, but Shorter himself saw this as a way to break away from boring traditions. He was constantly seeking new expressions, for good or for bad. That's why he was so interested in classical music and composers as well. (What you say about the 1980s, I would say about the 1950s and 60s, for instance. They hadn't yet learned how to use their new toys in a tasteful or refined manner. It was horrible sounding stereotypes all over the place. Especially so in pop music. Jazz was better in this regard, although often stiff.)

@@herrbonk3635 Let's then agree to disagree :) I'm not saying that it isn't historically important, or what he was doing didn't make sense at the time. But from this perspective it sounds like a (best in history) video game music and it's a fact, it's not about my taste or lack of thereof. If this same composition was recorded with acoustic instruments, or even electric but with sounds and production that aged well it would have been a different story. Everyone wears skinny jeans now, and a lot of men have huge beards, people are breaking from boring traditions of wearing normal jeans and being shaved or having some cool facial hair. That doesn't mean skinny jeans or those beards look good, they are still ridiculous. I apologize if you wear skinny jeans and have Viking beard :) Bass sounds like the worst sounding midi bass which makes it barely listenable. It's just a fact. Larry Klein plays on the other tracks and it sounds so much better. I'm a water drop in the ocean comparing to the ocean of Shorter's talent and knowledge, but I do some music and production, and when I bump into this synth bass sound I skip. Every decade is stereotypical yes when you are an average early 60s band imitating Beatles, or some average prog rock psychedelic trying to sound like Pink Floyd . Music needs form, form can be stereotypical, but substance using that form doesn't have to be. But when you are a great artist, you make something special within those stereotypes and forms. Any genre wouldn't be that genre without stereotypes, but substance overcomes them. This song is an example of when you have the best cake in the universe by the best pastry chef, but somebody put some ugly industrial chocolate syrup and whipped cream from the tube over it because they were just invented so let's try.

@@loonaya these sounds are more in fashion today than ever, much more so than traditionally recorded acoustic instruments. It's just different strokes. There's a whole generation of listeners who grew up on "old video game music" which serves as a major reference point for their musical taste. I wish he had more stuff like this.

Synth Basslines have their place. Just listen to some of the programmed lines on Incognito’s music, they’re killer. They contributed to bassists really upping their game and the emergence of extended range basses particularly 5 string which is pretty much standard these days. It’s all music.👍

I heard her version without knowing it was a Wayne tune, and my first though was "this sounds like almost every up-tempo song Frank Zappa wrote from 1973-1980". Singing melodies like this is an interesting challenge. There's a reason such vocal melodies are rare outside of music like Zappa's, or fellow travelers like Pere Ubu and late Joni Mitchell.
